IBS Foundation transformed Jowhar into a hub of literary excitement during its inaugural Community Literacy Week, reaching 500+ children and youth through immersive activities. The event, held at the Jowhar Community Center, featured:
- Interactive storytelling sessions with local authors and educators.
- Book donations of 2,000+ textbooks and storybooks to 10 schools.
- Parent workshops on fostering home literacy environments.
“Seeing children clutch their first-ever books brought tears to my eyes. This is how we build futures,” said Amina Farah, a teacher at Jowhar Primary School.
Why It Matters:
- 72% of participants had never owned a book before.
- The initiative aligns with IBS Foundation’s Education Pillar, aiming to reduce Somalia’s 40% youth illiteracy rate.
What’s Next:
Plans to expand to 3 more regions by 2026, with a focus on girls’ education.
